Bar Method Scarsdale: Small moves, big burn

Have you ever had that feeling halfway through a fitness class that this is not going to be as easy as you confidently expected when going in? That moment of truth where you realize just how sore your booty will be for the rest of the weekend? If not, stop what you’re doing and sign up for Bar Method now!

I like to think of myself as more of a yogi. I lunge low in warrior pose and shavasana like a boss. I love yoga because it gives me a good stretch but now (especially while wedding planning) I’ve been looking for something a little more challenging. I needed a good a$$ whooping so when Bar Method opened in Scarsdale, I had to check it out.

I’m not going to lie, I was not initially sold on Bar. A few girls I work with rave about how great the classes are and how sore they feel after but I was skeptical. The entire concept of small movements seemed too simple but of course I had to try it. I grabbed my fitness partner in crime (my unsuspecting sister) and signed us up for a 7:00 am Saturday class.

First thing’s first, the studio is SO nice! The reception area is stocked with Bar Method gear and decorated with motivational decals and pillows. The studios are bright and welcoming for those of you who are fit mommys’, there’s a playroom for your little ones to hang in.

Sara Giller, the studios owner, was our instructor this morning and she totally kicked our butts. At 7am, she had the energy and enthusiasm of a cheerleader at her first Harrison vs Rye pep rally. The music started and Sara sent all of us sleepwalkers right into fitness mode. Throughout the class we did moves with light weights (which felt 10 lbs heavier by the time the sequence was done), mats, straps and of course the ballet bar. Sara gave the class precise instructions to get us into the positions we needed to target just the right muscles. We tucked and squatted, pulsed and plied, and by the time the hour was up, our arms and legs were shaking.

Full disclosure, this is not a workout for a fitness beginner. I went into class grabbing the heavy (5 lb) weights and was quickly humbled. It’s tough but definitely doable if you’re looking for something to add into your fitness routine. Three days later I’m still feeling the burn in muscles I didn’t know I had (hello backs of my arms!) and I can’t wait to go back!
